The Importance of Insulation

After living in our first home for a few years, my wife and I could tell that something was wrong. It was exceptionally difficult to regulate our indoor climate, and we constantly found ourselves adjusting the thermostat. Our house was perpetually uncomfortable, and it was really frustrating. Fortunately, because we decided to hire a professional HVAC contractor to inspect our system, we were able to detect serious insulation problems early. We decided that it might be helpful to make a website dedicated to providing free information about heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, so that other people could recognize serious issues.

What's All The Racket? Making Your Garage Door Much Quieter

A garage door can create a loud, rumbling sound that can wake up the whole house. If your garage has sounded like this for some time, you may assume that this is inevitable. However, your garage door is likely this loud because of problems that you can actually fix, giving your home some peace and quiet.

Chances are that there is some part of your garage that needs to be lubricated. Parts that you must keep lubricated include

  • tracks
  • springs
  • hinges
  • rollers

Be sure to lubricate these parts with a lubricant that is only designed for metal. Do not lubricate the metal parts using grease.

Replace Rollers And Tighten Nuts

Loud noises can be a sign of a much more serious problem. You may have worn out rollers that need to be replaced. In addition to replacing old rollers, you can use quieter rollers that are made using nylon. Also, check all of the nuts and bolts to make sure they do not need to be tightened.

Insulate The Opener

If the noise is mostly coming from the garage door opener, you can muffle this sound by adding rubber padding. Remove the motor from its location, mounted to a wall. Then, place a rubber pad behind the mounting bracket. Finally, hang the motor from the rubber pad using mounting straps. Test the garage door opener and it should be much quieter. If you are concerned about making a mistake, contact a garage door specialist and ask if he or she has a similar solution.

If you want to make your garage door extra quiet, place vibration isolators between the opener brackets and the door opener housing. When doing this, make sure that you do not attach the metal brackets that hold the garage door opener tracks directly to the roof trusses.

Buy A Quieter Garage Door

When it is time to replace your garage door, make sure that you replace it with the rubber belt drive. These are much quieter than the chain-drive openers.

Adding polyurethane insulation to the door will not only reduce the noise created by the door but will also increase rigidity and will act as a thermal insulator. Sandwich-type doors are insulated and are much quieter than non-insulated doors. Each of these methods can make your garage door almost silent. But it is always best to have your garage door modified by a skilled garage door technician who can perfect your door the first time.
