The Importance of Insulation

After living in our first home for a few years, my wife and I could tell that something was wrong. It was exceptionally difficult to regulate our indoor climate, and we constantly found ourselves adjusting the thermostat. Our house was perpetually uncomfortable, and it was really frustrating. Fortunately, because we decided to hire a professional HVAC contractor to inspect our system, we were able to detect serious insulation problems early. We decided that it might be helpful to make a website dedicated to providing free information about heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, so that other people could recognize serious issues.

Treat Metal Gates That Have a Scratched, Faded Surface and Decorate Them for the Holidays

If the metal gates leading to your residence have a scratched, faded surface, the following steps will reverse signs of damage and provide the metal with a brilliant shine. After completing the steps, adorn each of the gates with a string of colorful holiday lights and a wreath to provide the entryway with a festive and inviting appearance.

Materials

  • metal cleaning agent
  • soft cloths
  • power sanding wheel
  • sanding disc (fine grit)
  • water
  • baking soda
  • bowl
  • whisk
  • buffing sponges
  • metal polish (designed for use on exteriors)
  • self-adhesive hooks
  • measuring tape
  • strings of holiday lights
  • power source
  • wreaths

Clean the Metal and Treat Scratches

Close and secure the gates. Use a standard metal cleaning agent to remove residue from each side of the metal. Treat one side before opening the gates and going through them to access the other side of the metal. Secure a sanding disc that contains fine grit sandpaper to a sanding wheel. Moisten the paper with a few drops of water. Press the sanding disc lightly against each scratched surface before turning the power sanding wheel on. The spinning of the wheel will fade each scratch as the paper comes into contact with the metal.

If you do not own a sanding wheel, mix equal amounts of baking soda and water in a bowl with a whisk. Add a thin, even layer of the homemade scratch remover to each visible scratch. Move a buffing cloth firmly in small circles over each area that contains the mixture. Apply more of the mixture if the initial treatment does not fade the scratches completely. Once you have finished using either scratch removal method, clean areas that were treated with more of the metal cleaning agent and a clean cloth.

Increase Shine and Adorn the Gates With Decorations

Pour a small amount of a metal polishing agent onto a clean, dry buffing sponge. Begin applying the polish to one corner of one side of the metal. Move the sponge around in tight circles as you press your palm firmly against the back of the buffing sponge. Pour more polish onto the sponge when it is needed, until both sides of each gate have been polished. Wipe away excess polish with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Secure self-adhesive hooks across the top of each gate. Use a measuring tape to assist with creating an even amount of space between each hook. Drape the strings of lights around the hooks before plugging the end of each power cord into an electrical outlet. Secure a hook to the center of one side of each gate. Hang a holiday wreath from each hook.
